South Seas Distilleries, known for being India’s oldest and largest producer of both luxury single malts and Mahura spirits, has broken new ground by introducing the world’s first aged Mahua spirit and a platinum-filtered white variant.

They’ve launched two unique spirits – Six Brothers 1922 Resurrection and Six Brothers Small Batch (Original). The 1922 Resurrection holds the distinction of being the world’s first matured Mahura spirit, aged for years in oak casks. This traditional drink is a product of a family’s expertise, honed over a century, and is refined through double distillation in India’s largest copper pot stills—the same ones used to make some of the country’s oldest single malts. It is limited to only 102 bottles available, priced at INR 1,02,000.

Joining the rare 1922 Resurrection is Six Brothers Small Batch (Original), a more approachable yet equally polished option. A choice for those looking to experience Mahua in a refined but accessible way.

The Mahura tree, which thrives in the forests of western, central and eastern India, has long been woven into the fabric of local life. In earlier times, people found shelter under its branches, while its flowers, fruits and leaves provided nourishment, medicine and even served as fodder for livestock. Its value was so recognized that its produce was often traded for essentials like grains, making it a cornerstone of the community. Resembling the ‘Tree of Life,’ the Mahura tree has been a quiet yet vital presence throughout generations.

The nectar from the Mahura flower was turned into this local drink that even royalty enjoyed. During colonial times, laws were put in place to stop people from collecting the flowers and making this traditional spirit. But the custom didn’t fade away. Families quietly kept it alive, brewing the drink for special moments, especially during festivals and celebrations, as a cherished treat passed down through the years.

“With 1922 Resurrection, we went beyond expectations. We uncasked some of India’s oldest casks in India’s largest maturation warehouse to reveal the first and most aged Mahura drink in the world. Bold, complex, and the first-of-its-kind,” said Hamavand Chinoy, Director of South Seas in the press release. “My great-grandfather and his brothers were pioneers in this craft, and this release symbolises our determination to bring India’s rarest liquid to the forefront of global luxury.”

Each bottle has six pairs of eyes at the bottom, with an all-seeing ‘Eye’ on the stopper, reflecting the family’s goal to bring an Indian spirit to the world. A tiger on theand claw marks at the base point to the founders’ resilience and their connection to the forests where the Mahua flower grows. The bottle’s vintage design features ribbed glass with a clean off-white and deep blue color scheme.
