From customised scents to new bottles decked out with precious gems, the fragrance industry has found its footing in the luxury market. As per Mens Fashion Magazine, after years of decline, consumers are back to buying perfumes, driving impressive growth in the sector.

According to SkyQuest Technology, the global luxury perfume market was valued at INR 1.1 lakh crore ($13.91 billion) in 2022. It’s set to grow from INR 1.2 lakh crore ($14.67 billion) in 2023 to INR 1.8 lakh crore ($22.34 billion) by 2031, with an annual growth rate of 5.4% expected over the next few years.

Perfumes tend to be pricey, especially the luxury ones that can cost thousands per bottle. The high price comes not just from their rare ingredients, but also from the process of extracting the scents and, in many cases, the design of the bottle itself.

Le Monde Sur Mesure

Created by the French brand Morreale, Paris, the five-kilogram Le Monde Sur Mesure perfume was sold for INR 15.11 crore ($1.8 million) to a buyer who customized their own scent. The bottle itself is a showstopper, made with two kilograms of gold and adorned with 1,000 diamonds. It takes a team of 35 people nearly a year to craft each one.

Shumukh

The next most expensive perfume is Shumukh, which is made in the UAE. Created by ‘Creators of Spirit’ under the luxury fragrance brand Nabeel, this perfume comes with a price tag of INR 10.91 crore ($1.3 million) for a 3-liter bottle. It’s housed in an Italian Murano crystal bottle, decorated with a gold falcon, Arabian horses, roses and a globe. The bottle features 3,571 diamonds (38.55 carats), large pearls, 2.5 kg of 18-K gold and 5.9 kg of pure silver. Standing at two meters tall, the bottle sits on a leather stand just as tall, earning it two Guinness World Records—one for the most diamonds on a perfume bottle and another for being the tallest remote-controlled fragrance bottle. The scent itself blends sandalwood, musk, ylang-ylang, Turkish rose, Indian agarwood and patchouli.

At one point, one of the most expensive perfumes ever sold was priced at INR 8.39 crore ($1 million). It was a collaboration between designer DKNY and jeweller Martin Katz, who crafted this perfume bottle. The bottle is made with 2,909 precious stones, including 183 yellow sapphires, 2,700 white diamonds, a 7.18-carat oval sapphire from Sri Lanka, 15 pink diamonds from Australia, 4 rose-cut diamonds, a 1.6-carat Paraiba tourmaline from Brazil, a 3.07-carat ruby, a 4.03-carat pear-shaped diamond and a 2.43-carat flawless yellow Canary diamond crowning the cap. Each stone was carefully hand-set over 1,500 hours to resemble the New York City skyline.

Clive Christian released a special edition cologne in 2014 to celebrate the opening of the Salon de Parfum at Harrods in London. While the regular bottle sold for INR 60 thousand ($720), this exclusive version was priced at INR 1.91 crore ($228,000), with 2,000 diamonds and a 24-karat gold lattice design.

In 2005, Clive Christian’s Imperial Majesty set a Guinness World Record as the most expensive perfume on the market, priced at INR 1.72 crore ($205,000). Only ten bottles were sold, and each one was personally delivered to the buyers in a Bentley.
